Safe Seminaries was created by a young female theology student who returned from several years of international human rights work to begin seminary studies for ordained ministry. Early into her program, she experienced an assault and repeat acts of intimidation by a female faculty member and an administrator, apparently due to her activist status on campus. She exhausted every avenue available to her within the seminary for stopping the behavior and filing a formal complaint, without success. In the process, she experienced retaliation from the administration on a variety of levels. Since then, she has left the ordination process in her original denomination, has switched denominations, and is transferring to another seminary. She is also getting a first-hand legal education on faculty misconduct, and has decided that at least for now, the church could use a few more human rights workers.
